We take another trip down memory lane this week asking Carol Lynch Williams and Luke Reynolds about some of their favorite memories.
What’s your favorite elementary school memory?
Carol Lynch Williams: When I was young, my mom was preparing to be an English teacher. She brought home tons of books and I read a lot of what she brought home. I was about 10 years old and I had just finished the Wizard of Oz. At the school library, I happened to find that the Wizard of Oz had sequels. Sequels!
I was so excited. I have this memory of kneeling on the floor and seeing all those titles.
And then there was Mrs. Emery. She was my fourth grade teacher. Mrs. Emery told scary stories. She was great.
I’m writing a middle grade novel right now and Mrs. Emery is in my novel. And wrasselers! Girl wrasslers!
Luke Reynolds: Meeting Mercer Mayer when I was in the 2nd grade.

In this week’s Back To School series, some of our Blink authors share the first book they remember reading as a child.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child?
Luke Reynolds: A book of scary stories called THE THING AT THE FOOT OF THE BED. I still have my tattered copy of the book!
Evangeline Denmark: My earliest book-related memories are of The Chronicles of Narnia. I used to pretend to be Lucy. I’m still kinda waiting for Mr. Tumnus to show up.
Denise Grover Swank: I learned to read before I went to kindergarten, and I remember reading a book about a girl who went shopping and begged her mother for red shoes instead of black ones.
Carol Lynch Williams: That was a long time ago, so I don’t really remember. Mom was bringing all her teacher-y stuff home. We were always memorizing poems with her and Mom would read her school books to us.

What was your favorite subject in school and why?
Evangeline Denmark: Language arts because I got to use the excess words in my brain. I used to make up stories out of the sentences I had to write for vocabulary words.
Denise Grover Swank: English class. I loved when we were assigned books to read and I loved writing.
Carol Lynch Williams: I loved the sciences and I love anything where I had the chance to read.
Luke Reynolds: English! I had great teachers who encouraged writing creatively and had FUN.
